Annan Thampi Review

3 stars

Annan Thambi is a laugh-a-minute comic escapade that would help boost your spirits and stretch those lips into a wide grin. A delightful blend of high and low humor pulled off splendidly with style, the film is a rib tickler that aims right at your funny bone.

Appu and Achu (Mammootty) are twin siblings who were born with swords drawn at each other and as years pass by, the no-holds-barred bullfight between the two goes on. A highly voluble Appu majestically rules over the Pollachi Market and is wooed by Thenmozhi (Laxmi Rai), niece to his erstwhile-associate-turned-foe Dharmarajan (Rajan P Dev). A dumb Achu meanwhile relives the Puranas in his dad's drama troupe while lamenting a lack of issues even after five years of matrimony with Lekshmi (Gopika).

Anwar Rasheed's Annan Thambi is a double dhamaka with nothing subtle or unique about it, and yet it's a movie that's fashioned to please. You do stand the risk of busting a gut on a couple of occasions despite the film unraveling a tale that's as old as mankind itself. Oh yes, we can see it all coming on time and right in place and we might even rail against it at times; it's nevertheless a charming film made bright by a few droll souls who spread loads of joy and cheer all around.

It's a mixed bag of hilarity in Annan Thambi; there are several of those slightly awkward moments and quite a few of the stomach ripping, laugh 'n roar kind. Brimming with unexpected and often uproarious events, the film strikes just the right balance between the salt and the sugar. Benny's might as a writer lies in the participative nature of his humor. He's quite in the swing of things here and accustomed to the beat of brotherhood and to the bonds that bound us all. He's sharp too and dabbles with a distinctive tone, to provide an appealing finish to his characters.

Rarely has there been an instance of an actor mimicking himself on screen. And when Mammootty does the apparently unthinkable, he drives an audience into a frenzied rapture with his highly infectious comic energy. With a free reign to be insane, the actor is a delight to watch in his dumb act, rediscovering the amusing facets of his personality time and again. The fun contingent with an immensely jovial Suraj Venjarammoodu at its helm, ably propped up by Harisree Ashokan and Salim Kumar stirs up a highly flavorsome concoction, with the right doses of wit, slapstick and gags. Among the lady leads, Gopika puts up a remarkable feat while Laxmi Rai is around with the right dosage of oomph.

Annan Thambi teems with obvious humor and stereotyped characters, and is nonetheless agreeable, mostly because the movie does not pretend to be anything it isn't. It might not be a refined comedy, but it's positively enjoyable since within its formulaic precincts, the humor works unusually well continually. It's a comedy that has likeable, earthy characters as well as consistent laughs which could have done infinitely better with a robust setting as well.

Which is why, stripped down to its core, I would brand Annan Thambi as a Rajamanikyam reincarnate in a dual avatar. And incredible filmmaking this certainly is not, but if you're on the lookout for an entertaining, undemanding couple of hours, you could for sure give Annan थम्बी

Review From The Hindu

Brothers in arms VIJAY GEORGE
‘Annan Thampi’ is the cynosure of all eyes as Anwar Rasheed and Mammootty team up again after the stupendous success of ‘Rajamanikyam.’

Every character, regardless of its varying shades, is dear to the actor.

New image: Mammootty and Anwar Rasheed say that ‘Annan Thampi’ will be a family entertainer.

After creating a new image and a smashing hit for superstar Mammootty, Anwar Rasheed, director of ‘Rajamanikyam,’ has now come up with a double helping of Mammootty to celebrate Vishu.

Anwar’s ‘Annan Thampi’ has Mammootty playing the roles of Achu and Appu. “While Achu is vocally challenged, Appu is a tough character,” says Mammootty.

“It was the search for a character that Mammoootty has not enacted before that helped us select this theme,” says Anwar Rasheed, whose profile boasts two high profile films – ‘Rajamanikyam’ and ‘Chotta Mumbai.’

Scenarist Benny Nayarambalam adds that it was Mammootty himself who first suggested the possibility of such a character. Although, the film was initially set in an urban theme, later on it was decided to narrate the story against a rural backdrop.

Sibling rivalry

“The twins never liked each other even as toddlers and the sibling rivalry worsened as they grew up. Achu’s speech problem accentuated the rivalry. Finally, the twins are separated; Appu is sent to relatives in Tamil Nadu while Achu stays back with his parents. Mayhem ensues whenever they meet but eventually, the two realise the strength of their ties,” narrates Benny.

Mammootty says that it was a challenge to play Achu. “He has a speech disability but still manages to express himself. I am always on the lookout for such challenging roles. The other character that I enact in the film, Appu, is a habitual troublemaker,” says the star.

Shades of the tough but genial Rajamanikyam seem to have coloured Appu’s character. But Anwar does not seem to be bogged down by great expectations of another ‘Rajamanikyam.’

Different theme

“Such comparisons or expectations do not bother me. And if viewers are expecting another ‘Rajamanikyam,’ well, I am all set to break that myth with an entirely different theme,” says Anwar.

His films usually revolve around the hero and do not have much space for heroines. “It was not done deliberately. Things are different in ‘Annan Thampi’ and the film has two heroines, Gopika and Lakshmi Rai, and they play key roles in the story.

“‘Annan Thampi’ is a family entertainer; it is different from my other films. I believe that the filmmaking process for each project should evolve according to the director’s and scenarist’s mindset and not attempt to pander to popular demand or blindly follow a trend,” says Anwar.

Which is Mammootty’s favourite among the two roles that he portrays in ‘Annan Thampi’?

“I can’t choose. May be the audience or every one else involved in its making can choose one as their favourite, but as an actor, I can’t be prejudiced. Every character, regardless of its varying shades, is dear to the actor,” he avers.

‘Annan Thampi’ is being produced by Marikar Films। “Seven films have come out of the banner since last April and this is our fourth film with Mammootty as the hero,” says Anto Joseph, one of the producers.

Annan Thampi Preview

After the highly successful Raajamaanickam and then Chotta Mumbai (which too was a hit), director Anwar Rasheed gets ready with his third film, Annan Thambi. The film, scripted by popular scenarist Benny P. Nayarambalam, tells the story of two brothers Appu and Achchu, the sons of Ravunni, a ballet artist. While Appu is noisy and talkative, Achchu is forced to remain silent as he is born dumb. These differences between them has resulted in hostility brewing between them and hence their father has to separate them in earlier years itself, bringing them up in two different places.

Appu grows up in Pollachi, and is always ready to clench his fists and fight as and when required. He and his gang of friends are always in the middle of one boisterous activity or other. Achchu is with his father in Palakkad, as the main artist in his father's ballet troupe. He is a do-gooder, always ready to help people out. The two brothers grow up as enemies, but their friends and all those around them want to see them united as loving brothers.

It is the story of these two brothers that is etched out in Annan Thambi, with Mammootty playing a dual role, as Appu and Achchu. Lakshmi Rai, who entered Mollywood with Rock 'n Roll, plays Thenmozhi, Appu's lover, while Gopika is Lakshmi, Achchu's wife and a ballet artist herself. Janardhanan plays Ravunni. The colourful entertainer has been shot mostly in and around Pollachi and is getting ready for a Vishu Release.

The superhit team of Mammootty and director Anwar Rasheed, who gave us the entertaining Rajamanickam, is back again for a film, titled Annan Thampi. As its name suggests, it is a story around the lives of twin brothers.

The film has Gopika playing the female lead. Gopika had earlier paired with Mammootty in the blockbuster Mayavi. Lakshmi Rai is also doing an important role in the film.

Annan Thampi is scripted by P. Nayarambalam, who has earlier given us entertaining fares like Chanthupottu and Thommanum Makkalum (which, incidentally, was also about two brothers). Shooting for the film is going at a rapid pace in Pollachi and it is expected to release this Vishu.
